Telecel appoints new CEO as Makamba resurfaces

Thezimbabwean.co  18.06.2015

Angeline Vere has been appointed as new CEO of Telecel Zimbabwe effective June 10, 2015.

Exiled Zimbabwean business tycoon, James Makamba, has resurfaced in the ongoing Telecel Zimbabwe saga, announcing the appointment of a new chief executive officer and claiming to the chair of the company’s board of directors. Makamba, in a statement, announced that Angeline Vere had been appointed the new CEO from June 10. Wrote Makamba: “The Telecel Zimbabwe Board of Directors is happy to announce the appointment of Angeline Vere as the Chief Executive Officer of Telecel Zimbabwe from June 10, 2015.” He said the appointment was in line with the company’s equal employment opportunity and empowerment policies. Vere was in 2013 appointed the Telecel general manager and became the legal manager in 2014. In 2010, she became the company secretary and legal director and has more than 17 years experience in the telecommunications sector. Prior to joining Telecel, Vere worked for several companies that include the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ), TelOne and the Attorney General’s office. She holds legal qualifications specialising in commercial law and a diploma in finance and accounting. Makamba’s leadership of Telecel Zimbabwe has been in dispute over a long time and it was not immediately clear if new developments had authorised him to lead the board. The likes of Jane Mutasa and her faction have fiercely resisted Makamba’s continued involvement in Telecel, whose licence was recently cancelled by government over its failure to pay the required operating fee. Reports indicate a cabal of Zanu (PF) hawks is angling to take over stakes at the telecommunications oufit.

Minister Monica Maeland calls for more female CEOs

NRK.no  09.06.2015

The startling lack of female CEOs has become even more glaringly apparent in recent months, as large Norwegian firms like Statoil, Telenor and Yara just couldn’t seem to find a qualified woman to fill their top posts. In view of this, Norway’s Trade Minister Monica Maeland now intends to exert some of the state’s influence, as a major shareholder, to prod board chairmen (also mostly men) into grooming and hiring women as CEOs.

Silent about female candidates

Dagsavisen.no  02.06.2015

Telenor BoD’s Chairman Svein Aaser has refused to answer how many women he called in for an interview to apply for a job in Telenor. Norwegian Minister Monica Maeland made it clear that Telenor Board should look for a woman when replacing Jon Fredrik Baksaas. Thus, the minister was tough when it turned out that the choice fell on Sigve Brekke (55), Telenor’s Asia chief. Telenor’s BoD has contracted the Danish headhunter firm Egon Zehnder which short-listed 12 candidates. Several independent sources said that only one of those should have been a woman. Another source close to the process said, however, that there were more women in for interviews. The headhunter firm has neither confirmed nor denied that they have been involved in the process.

Hun mottok ODA-prisen for sin innsats for a fa flere kvinner i ledende stillinger i telebransjen.
