Mobile users cross 12.5cr mark in May

The country’s active mobile phone subscribers crossed 12.50 crore mark in May as the mobile operators added more than 12 lakh new users in the month. Banglalink’s subscriber number reached 3.21 crore as it added one lakh new users in the month.

 

The country’s active mobile phone subscribers crossed 12.50 crore mark in May as the mobile operators added more than 12 lakh new users in the month. According to the latest data of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, the total mobile phone subscribers reached 12.59 crore in May when all mobile companies but Citycell added new customers. Leading mobile phone operator Grameenphone added 4.85 lakh new users in the month which took its total subscriber base to 5.28 crore. Banglalink’s subscriber number reached 3.21 crore as it added one lakh new users in the month. Robi added 5 lakh new subscribers in the month which took its total subscriber base to 2.71 crore. Airtel’s subscribers reached 85.16 lakh in the month as the operator added 1.35 lakh new users. State-run Teletalk added 65,000 new users in the month which took its total subscriber base to 41.61 lakh. Citycell’s continued to lose customers as the operator lost 23,000 users in the month. Bangladesh issued its first mobile licence in 1993 but the growth had been slow in the first 10 years, with the total number of subscribers reaching just 15 lakh in early 2003. The mobile market started growing rapidly in 2003 and the number of mobile users hit 5 crore in 2009. The number of active mobile phone users crossed 10 crore mark in April 2013.
