Telenor has completed its major network renovation and upgrade project ahead of schedule and now has a 4G-ready network which offers higher data speed and capacity and much improved overall user experience, the company chief executive officer Stein-Erik Vellan told a news conference held today. The project was part of the Telenor long-term commitment in Bulgaria and is within the company strategy for offering the best mobile internet services in Bulgaria. Telenor 3G network now offers data speed of up to 42 Mbps under the HSPA+ technology to all users in towns and cities with population of more than 5000 and up to 21 Mbps in most of the remaining areas. Currently, Telenor’s 42 Mbps-capable outdoor network covers nearly 89% of Bulgarian population and more than 300 locations with population of over 2,000, representing about 47% of the country’s territory, the highest among all Bulgarian operators, according to the official data of all companies. The company’s 21 Mbps network covers almost 96% of the country’s territory and 99.87% of the population. To celebrate the completion of the project, Telenor offers its customers to test the new capabilities of the network. By September 15, postpaid users may opt for a one-off free bundle of 500 MB at maximum speed, valid for 30 days, by sending a free SMS with keyword START to short number 500 or via the MyMenu service by dialing *123#. «Telenor now has the network that would allow it to continue developing advanced telecommunication solutions, including LTE-based products and services, which will further boost the company’s competitive position on Bulgarian market», Mr. Vellan said. «We expect the Bulgarian regulator to complete the process for awarding additional spectrum in the 1800 MHz band so we can proceed with rolling out our 4G services», he added. «The network renovation project, started in April 2014, included full replacement and upgrade of the operator’s entire 2G and 3G network, the access and backbone transport network as well as the core network, including related services», said Telenor Bulgaria Chief Technical Officer Vladimir Radojicic. «Excellent planning and superb coordination with project partners Huawei were the reasons the project to be completed ahead of schedule and with no major inconvenience for the users. The new network successfully passed a major test during the heavy snows in March 2015 when in many towns and villages in Southern Bulgaria, Telenor network was the only operational communications link with the rest of the country», Mr. Radojicic added. «Telenor customers already enjoy the benefits of the renovated and upgraded network, including dramatically increased average download and upload data speed in the most populous cities and better mobile application performance, leading to overall data usage increase of by some 151% between March 2014 and May 2015.», commented Telenor Technology Planning Division Director Spas Velinov. Telenor Bulgaria is a leading telecommunication company with over 3.8 million active subscribers in Bulgaria. As of end-March 2015, the company’s services are available to 99.98% of Bulgaria’s population, covering over 99.50% of the country’s territory, and Telenor UMTS network covers more than 98% of the population. By November 4, 2014, the company operated under the GLOBUL brand. Since August 1, 2013, it has been a part of Telenor Group which operates in 13 countries in Europe and Asia and has 190 million subscribers.
